Edinburgh's most respectable dentist has a strict 10pm bedtime. This Christmas, a glitter-covered elf is going to keep him up very late. Fraser Lennox is forty-nine, silver-haired and impeccably tidy, and every child in Edinburgh knows him as the Tooth Fairy. He polishes the brass plate on his late father's practice every month, wears the same good cardigans and lives by one rule: Folk talk, Fraser. Give them nothing to say. He's been in bed by ten every night for ten years.
Then Fionn Brennan crashes into his diary. A twenty-four-year-old Irish actor between jobs, Fionn is head elf in a department store's Christmas grotto, terrified of dentists, and spectacularly accident-prone. In one week he chips a tooth on a candy cane, loses a crown to a mince pie and knocks out a filling in an over-enthusiastic elf dance, shouting "Get me to the Tooth Fairy!" in front of a woman with a phone.
By midnight, the whole city has a hashtag for them. What follows is a viral video, a meddling practice manager, a Santa with secrets, a sprig of very misplaced mistletoe and a romance Fraser never planned on, conducted under the gaze of half of Edinburgh. But Fionn has his own reasons for always being the funny one, and a life-changing offer he hasn't told Fraser about. And when a department store turns their love story into an advert, Fraser has to decide, before the bells ring on Christmas Eve, whether he cares more about what people think, or about the man who has turned his tidy life upside down.
